Origins of the Library

Evidence for the scrinium of the Roman Church, which was both a library and an archive, goes back as far as the fourth century. In the sixth century it was placed under the primicerius notariorum, and at the end of the eighth century, the first Cardinal Librarian of the Holy Roman Church was named, who also played the role of chancellor. For reasons which are still unclear, the earliest papal libraries and archives were dispersed in the first half of the thirteenth cOrigins of the Library

In the sixth century it was placed under the primicerius notariorum, and at the end of the eighth century, the first Cardinal Librarian of the Holy Roman Church was named, who also played the role of chancellor. For reasons which are still unclear, the earliest papal libraries and archives were dispersed in the first half of the thirteenth century. The new collections gathered by the thirteenth-century Popes, which can be reconstructed thanks to an inventory made under Boniface VIII, were moved after his death in 1303 first to Perugia, then to Assisi, and finally to Avignon, a process which involved considerable losses. In Avignon, John XXII began to gather a new library, which became part of the collection of the Borghese family in the seventeenth century and returned to the Holy See in 1891
